LITHUANIA URGED BELARUS TO TAKE IMMEDIATE ACTION TO SUSPEND DANGEROUS WATER LEVEL DROP IN THE NEMUNAS RIVER
On August 2, Lithuania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs sent a diplomatic note to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus and requested to take immediate action to suspend the water level drop in the river Nemunas, to inform on the reasons of this drop in the river level and to allow the experts from Lithuania to visit Belarus, in order to assess the situation in the country.
The diplomatic note was sent regarding and important decrease in water level below the environmental limits, on July 28 near Druskininkai that represented significant risk to the ecosystem of the river and shipping.
The Lithuanian experts are convinced that this phenomenon could not be caused by natural factors and is likely due to human activities. According to the experts, this dangerous drop in the river level could be caused by the time when Belarusians started filling water reservoirs of the Grodno hydroelectric power plant.
Lithuania’s Ministry of Environment, in its turn, contacted the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of Belarus.
