Lithuania to serve on the Executive Committee of the Community of Democracies

Lithuania became a member of the Executive Committee of the Community of Democracies for the 2024-2027 term. This is yet another achievement of Lithuania after the Governing Council of the Community of Democracies elected Dr Mantas Adomėnas, the candidate nominated by the Government of Lithuania, as the coalition’s next Secretary-General in early August for 2024-2027.

Lithuania, Canada, Morocco, Panama, Poland, the Republic of Korea, and the United States of America will be the Executive Committee members as of 15 September 2024.

The Executive Committee is composed of elected Governing Council member states and provides strategic recommendations and opinions to the Governing Council for it to take decisions on the activities of the Community of Democracies.

Born as a joint initiative of former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and Polish Foreign Minister Bronisław Geremek, the Community of Democracies was founded in Warsaw in 2000. The Community of Democracies is a global intergovernmental coalition comprising the Governing Council member states supporting adherence to shared democratic values and standards. It is represented in the international fora by the elected Secretary General.

The Community of Democracies has more than 100 members. Lithuania has been a member since its establishment and chaired it from 2009 to 2011. The Secretariat, based in Warsaw, coordinates the day-to-day activities of the Community of Democracies.
