Lithuania to seek to strengthen economic ties with Algeria

On 25 September in Vilnius, the Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Neris Germanas met with the new Ambassador of Algeria Salah Lebdioui to discuss bilateral ties and the first political consultations to be held before the end of this year in Vilnius.

The Lithuanian Foreign Vice-Minister underlined positive trends in economic exchange and noted that there was still much room for further cooperation in this field. According to Germanas, the development of economic relations needs a solid legal foundation, which could be strengthened through the signing of an agreement on economic cooperation and an agreement on the promotion and protection of investments.

The meeting also discussed important international issues, such as the situation in Syria, Libya and Mali, where 3 Lithuanian soldiers serve in the European Union Training Mission. As regards the migration, the interlocutors agreed that it was necessary not only to resolve conflicts in the countries from which migrants were fleeing to Europe, but also to strengthen cooperation with transit countries for migration, including Algeria.

Lithuania and Algeria established diplomatic relations in 1994. On 25 September, the Algerian Ambassador, who resides in Warsaw, presented his letters of credence to the President of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė. He is the 5th diplomatic representative of Algeria in Lithuania.
