LITHUANIA THANKS JAPAN FOR ITS ROLE IN THE PROVINCE OF GHOR, AFGHANISTAN

On 14 October, Director of the Western Europe Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan Jun Yanagi paid a visit to the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Political Director of the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Eitvydas Bajarūnas received the guest and thanked Japan for its cooperation in Afghanistan and for Japan’s support to the development cooperation projects in Afghanistan’s Ghor province.

Four Japanese development cooperation experts have been working in the Lithuanian-led Provincial Reconstruction Team in Ghor province since the spring of 2009. Their work is related to the rural development of the province. During the recent years, the Japanese Government has financed 31 projects worth 3.5 million U.S. dollars under the programme “Grand Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects”.

Political Director E.Bajarūnas and Jun Yanagi discussed bilateral relations and preparations for the forthcoming visit of Lithuanian Foreign Minister A.Ažubalis to Japan.

E.Bajarūnas thanked Japan for its support to the Lithuanian cultural projects and presented the priorities of Lithuania’s upcoming chairmanship of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) in 2011 and of its Presidency of the European Union in 2013.

Political Director of Lithuanian MFA and the official from Japan, which is an OSCE’s partner, discussed possibilities to share experience, to implement joint projects and to benefit not only from global, but also from regional formats in dealing with global challenges.

During the meeting, prospects for cooperation between the EU and Japan, a strategic EU’s partner, and the security situation in the East Asian region were also discussed.
