LITHUANIA SUPPORTS THE REFORM OF THE ORGANIZATION INITIATED BY HEAD OF THE COUNCIL OF EUROPE, LITHUANIA'S FOREIGN VICE-MINISTER SAYS

On 11 May at the 120th Session of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, Lithuania’s Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Šarūnas Adomavičius stated that Lithuania supported the initiatives of the Secretary General of the Council of Europe to reform this organization. The Vice-Minister highlighted the important role of the Council of Europe in promoting democratic values on the European continent and the responsibility of the Governments of the member states of the Council of Europe for the future of the European Court of Human Rights.

At the Session of the Committee of Ministers, the ongoing the reform process of entire organisation and the future of the European Court of Human Rights were discussed, as well as the action taken by the Council of Europe following the war in 2008 in Georgia, aid to Bosnia-Herzegovina in the constitutional reform process, and closer relations between the Council of Europe and the European Union.

The reform of the Council of Europe aims to increase the organization’s political significance and influence, and to ensure its internal consistency. The reform encompasses structural and administrative designs, defining the priorities of the activities, budget review and human resources constraints.

Head of the Lithuanian delegation stressed Lithuania’s strong support to Georgia’s sovereignty and its territorial integrity. He also said that the ongoing dialogue on Georgia at the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe had to be based on the political will and the fulfilment of the commitments to the Council of Europe.

Vice-Minister Š.Adomavičius thanked Head of the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs Micheline Calmy-Rey for chairing the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe successfully for the last six months and wished success to Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Macedonia Antonio Milososki, as ‘the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia’ has taken over the chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers from Switzerland for the next six months.
