On September 26, 2001 vice-minister of Foreign Affairs and Chief coordinator for Lithuania’s integration into NATO Giedrius Čekuolis received U.S. defence attaché Lt.Col. Albert Zaccor and discussed Lithuanian measures in a common anti-terror campaign. Vice-minister Čekuolis briefed the US representative on Lithuania’s National programme against terrorism, which is under preparation. "Lithuania will support U.S. and NATO actions until the end of the anti-terrorist campaign," Čekuolis said. On the part of the US government, defence attache Zaccor expressed appreciation for Lithuania’s support.
Lithuania’s diplomatic clearance for the U.S. aircraft to transit national airspace is one of the practical measures in the pending campaign against terrorism. "By providing U.S. aircraft the right to use Lithuanian airspace, Lithuania demonstrates its political will and acts as a loyal ally of NATO and the U.S.," vice-minister Čekuolis stressed.
