LITHUANIA SUPPORTS GEORGIA ON ITS PATH OF DEMOCRATIC REFORMS
In Tbilisi, on 9 November Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Petras Vaitiekūnas and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia Gela Bezhuashvili discussed the situation in Georgia and reforms that are being implemented in the country, as well as the issues of Euro-Atlantic integration. The Ministers also discussed the participation in the European Neighbourhood policy, bilateral development assistance projects, possibilities to reach agreements on visa facilitation regime and free trade with the European Union. Minister of Foreign Affairs P.Vaitiekūnas intends to raise these issues at the next meeting of Foreign Ministers of the European Union.
While discussing the situation in Georgia, the Head of Lithuanian diplomacy emphasized the importance of free and democratic elections, press freedom and dialogue with the opposition.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia presented the current situation and indicated that Georgia understood the impact of the situation on the international image of Georgia. However, according to Minister G.Bezhuashvili, declaring of a state of emergency was the only way out for Georgia.
The representative of Georgia assured that the presidential elections that were due on 5 January 2008, would comply with all international norms, as international observers were already being invited.
During the conversation with the Head of Georgian diplomacy, Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs P.Vaitiekūnas expressed his expectation for Georgia to pass the exam and continue to introduce successful reforms in the country, on its path to democracy.
Today the meetings of Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs P.Vaitiekūnas with President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili and Prime Minister Zurab Noghaideli are also scheduled in Tbilisi.
