LITHUANIA SUPPORTED UKRAINE’S ASPIRATIONS AND URGED RUSSIA TO COMPLY WITH ITS OBLIGATIONS
On 8 December Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Antanas Valionis took part in the meetings of the NATO-Russia Council and the NATO-Ukraine Commission.
In the NATO-Russia Council meeting Lithuanian Foreign Minister reminded that during the last NATO-Russia Council meeting in Vilnius Russia signed a Partnership for Peace Status of Forces Agreement. The Minister named ecological reconstruction of Kaliningrad military bases as one of possible NATO-Russia Council cooperation spheres.
The Minister took a positive view of Russia’s military forces withdrawal from Georgia, but urged Russia to meet its obligation to withdraw military forces from Moldova.
In the NATO-Ukraine Commission meeting the strategy of the Intensified Dialogue with Ukraine was considered, opinions on Ukraine’s NATO membership possibilities we exchanged. In the meeting Minister Valionis reaffirmed Lithuania’s support for Ukraine.
“Lithuania believes, that Ukraine should have a clear perspective of Alliance membership. The launch of the membership action plan would be a consequent step on the Ukraine’s way to NATO. Undoubtedly Ukrainian authorities should continue reforms,” Lithuanian Foreign Minister said.
