LITHUANIA SUGGESTS TO SHARE ITS EXPERIENCE OF THE EU ACCESSION WITH ICELAND
On 16 March in Vilnius, Lithuania’s Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Evaldas Ignatavičius and new Ambassador of Iceland to Lithuania Elin Flygenring discussed the bilateral relations, cooperation within international organizations, regional cooperation and issues of gender equality. The Vice-Minister thanked Iceland for its support to Lithuania’s freedom aspirations twenty years ago, as Iceland was the first country to recognize the re-establishment of the Independence of Lithuania in 1991.
“Despite economic difficulties in both countries, the relationship between Lithuania and Iceland is special and there are possibilities to develop our bilateral and regional relations,” Vice-Minister E.Ignatavičius said.
During the meeting, the Vice-Minister suggested that Lithuania shares its experience of preparing for the European Union accession with Iceland.
In February, the European Commission announced its Opinion and called for talks with Iceland regarding its accession to the EU.
The Ambassador of Iceland to Lithuania resides in Helsinki, Finland.
In 2009, the trade turnover between Lithuania and Iceland totalled 89.7 million Litas. Lithuania’s trade balance with Iceland was positive and amounted to 9.5 million Litas. In 2009, Lithuania’s exports to Iceland amounted to 49.6 million Litas, while imports reached 40.1 million Litas.
