On 12 September, Lithuanian Ambassador to France Asta Skaisgirytė-Liauškienė met with Secretary General of the Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD) Donald J. Johnston and handed in a letter by Lithuanian Foreign Minister Antanas Valionis, whereby Lithuania officially applied for membership in OECD.
The Lithuanian Ambassador expressed her satisfaction with the dynamic and mutually beneficial Lithuania-OECD relations. She emphasised the great importance of OECD membership for Lithuania, and noted that Lithuania was ready to become an active OECD member.
The OECD Secretary General observed that Lithuania had developed an active dialogue with OECD, and was the first of the Baltic States to apply for OECD membership. The Secretary General was hopeful that this step by Lithuania would promote more active discussions on OECD’s further enlargement.
On 17 July this year, the Lithuanian Government decided that Lithuania should aspire membership in OECD, whose activities include various areas ranging from education and science to macroeconomics, investment and fiscal policy.
