Lithuania strengthens its relationship with Uruguay
On 14 February, the Lithuania-Uruguayan political consultations were held in Montevideo, Uruguay. The Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Darius Skusevičius and Uruguay's Deputy Foreign Minister Ariel Bergamino devoted considerable attention to situations in South America and Europe, discussed ways to encourage both countries' businesses to more intensively use and establish contacts, as well as to tap into the bilateral trade potential.
The participants of the meeting highlighted the unique role of Lithuanians living in Uruguay in the development of this country. José Gurvich /Zusmanas Gurvičius (1927-1974), who originally came from Jieznas in the Trakai region, is one of the best examples of this. He is a famous artist, whose work is exhibited in major cities all around the world.
Several thousand people of Lithuanian descent live in Uruguay. Most of them reside in Montevideo. The Lithuanian Uruguayan cultural society was established in 1967. It seeks to preserve the Lithuanian national identity, to foster an appreciation for the Lithuanian culture and folk art, and to promote the Lithuanian language learning in the local Lithuanian community.
Lithuania and Uruguay established their diplomatic relations in 1931, and re-established them in 1991. Since 2012, the Honorary Consulate of Lithuania has operated in Montevideo. It is headed by the Lithuanian Honorary Consul in Uruguay Cecilia Hernandez Svobas.
