LITHUANIA STARTS ITS FIRST ASSISTANCE PROJECT IN AFRICA
Implementing the UN Millennium Development Goals and taking into consideration international commitments on providing support to the poorest states, Lithuania funds its first development cooperation project on the African continent in Mauritania.
In April, 2006 Lithuanian delegation visited Mauritania and proposed in its conclusions to concentrate Lithuania’s assistance to healthcare and oceanography spheres.
In accordance with these conclusions and taking into account the needs of the Ministry of Fisheries and Maritime Economy of Mauritania the Department of Fisheries under the Ministry of Agriculture of Lithuania and the Institute of Coastal Research and Planning of Klaipeda University has prepared and will implement the development cooperation project “Mapping of the Exclusive Economic Zone of Mauritania for Fishing”, the value of which is about 50 000 litas.
More than ten fishing trawlers under Lithuanian flag and with several hundreds of Lithuanian citizens sail in the territorial waters of Mauritania. It is planned to open a consular post headed by Honorary Consul of Lithuania in Mauritania in the nearest time.
