Lithuania signs the United Nations Convention against Cybercrime
On 22 September, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Kęstutis Budrys signed the United Nations (UN) Convention against Cybercrime. It is the first international treaty to combat cybercrime.
The main provisions of the Convention criminalize a wide range of cybercrimes, including illegal access to systems, data breaches, digital fraud and child sexual abuse content. The Convention also provides for procedural measures such as international legal assistance, extradition and the exchange of electronic evidence. It also includes measures to protect human rights.
"Cybercrime knows no borders and can only be tackled effectively through enhanced international cooperation. This United Nations Convention is an important step towards a common legal framework that will help states to prevent cybercrime more effectively, better protect citizens and ensure a safe digital space," said Foreign Minister Budrys.
To date, 82 countries have signed the Convention.
