LITHUANIA SIGNS THE CONVENTION ON CLUSTER MUNITIONS

On 3 December in Oslo, during a special conference dedicated to the signing of the Convention, Lithuania’s representative, Ambassador to the Kingdom of Norway Alfonsas Eidintas signed the Convention on Cluster Munitions. This Convention prohibits any use, development, production, acquisition, stockpiling and transfer of cluster munitions.

Under this Convention, States Parties are obliged to destroy their stockpiles of cluster munitions, to clear the territories from cluster remnants and to assist those who had suffered from these munitions.

It is expected that during the conference in Oslo, the Convention will be signed by about 100 states that had agreed on the text of the Convention at the Dublin Diplomatic Conference on Cluster Munitions on 30 May this year.

The Convention will come into effect six months after its ratification by 30 states that have signed the Convention. In Lithuania, the Convention has to be ratified by the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania (Parliament).

Since the very beginning of negotiations, Lithuania has supported the endorsement of this legally binding instrument of the international humanitarian law and hopes that it will also prompt the process of implementation of the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons (CCW).

Lithuanian Army does not stockpile cluster munitions.
