LITHUANIA SIGNS CIVIL LAW CONVENTION ON CORRUPTION

On 18 April, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Lithuania at the Council of Europe, Ambassador Rokas Bernotas signed Civil Law Convention on Corruption in Strasbourg. The Civil Law Convention will come into effect in Lithuania after it is ratified by the Lithuanian Seimas. The Civil Law Convention on Corruption, which was worked out by the Council of Europe in 1999, for the first time defined general international norms in the fields of civil law and corruption. The states, which have joined the Convention, take up an obligation to confirm the provisions in their national laws envisaging compensation for harm to persons, who have suffered from corruption. The provisions of the Civil Law Convention also envisage a state’s responsibility for corrupt activities of state employees.
