LITHUANIA SIGNS A MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING ON COOPERATION WITH GERMAN MARSHALL FUND OF THE UNITED STATES
On 27 June in Vilnius, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius and President of the German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF) Craig Kennedy signed a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in the initiative in Middle East and North Africa – the MENA Partnership for Democracy & Development.
“We all are interested in and aim at achieving positive developments in the Middle East and North Africa region. Therefore, Lithuania with its democratization experience and awareness of the need to support the process of democratic transformation and reforms of the transition period joins the MENA Partnership for Democracy & Development that is being launched by the German Marshall Fund,” said Linkevičius at the meeting with the GMF President.
The Foreign Minister noted that Lithuania was interested in joining the MENA Partnership for Democracy & Development and in sharing its experience with partners in the Middle East and North Africa region.
The MENA Partnership for Democracy & Development is a ground-breaking public-private partnership that aims to promote regional cooperation and good governance in the countries of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), helping local organizations to meet their specific needs and address challenges in individual countries and the entire region. Working across the full range of democratic reform, the MENA Partnership will focus particularly on women’s empowerment, democratic advocacy, and economic reform.
The German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF) is launching the MENA Partnership for Democracy & Development, based in Tunisia. GMF will draw on the experience of its existing trusts. The U.S. Department of State will be one of its founding supporters.
