LITHUANIA SHALL FOLLOW WORLD’S BEST PRACTICES OF THE COMPENSATION FOR JEWISH COMMUNAL PROPERTY

When solving the issues of compensation for the unlawfully expropriated Jewish real estate, Lithuania will follow the guidelines of the declaration for the restitution and compensation of real estate confiscated by the Nazis during the Holocaust era, which was adopted on 9 June in Prague.

The Declaration “Guidelines and Best Practices for the Restitution and Compensation of Immovable (Real) Property Confiscated or Otherwise Wrongfully Seized by the Nazis, Fascists and Their Collaborators during the Holocaust (Shoah) Era” is recommendatory by nature.

Along with Lithuania, 43 other countries made the declaration after the conference on the restitution and compensation of Jewish real property confiscated by the Nazis during the Holocaust era.

The declaration recommends the best practices and forms in order to compensate for the Jewish property that was wrongfully seized during the Holocaust and to restore historical justice. The countries that endorsed the document emphasize their determination to develop their own national programs and legislation for addressing the compensation and restitution of confiscated immovable (real) property. The aim is to restore property rights that were breached during the Holocaust.

The conference was organized by the European Shoah Legacy Institute that was founded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic. The Institute brings together representatives from governmental and non-governmental organizations from many countries, as well as experts on issues related to the Holocaust.

At the conference, Lithuania was represented by country’s Ambassador to the Czech Republic Aurimas Taurantas.
