Lithuania sends humanitarian aid to Italy
On 22 April, Lithuania sent essential medical devices including personal protective equipment for coronavirus disease (COVID-19) to Italy. The country provided humanitarian aid in accordance with the decision of the Lithuanian Government of 8 April to its close partner, Italy, in response to its request for face masks and medical gear to help fight the pandemic that has caused a large number of deaths in the country.
“Lithuania is monitoring the situation in Italy with great anxiety and sympathy. The tragedy struck us all irrespective of nationality, religion, age or social status. In an act of solidarity Lithuanians decided to help Italians and send medical supplies,” wrote the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius in his letter to the Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs Luigi di Maio.
Medical devices worth around EUR 60, 000 were acquired from the UAB Intersurgical, which operates in Pabradė. The company designs, manufactures and supplies a wide range of medical devices for respiratory support. It has several branches in foreign countries, including Italy.
The humanitarian aid is transported to Italy free of charge by one of Europe's largest road transport companies – Girteka Logistics.
Italy is one of the hardest hit countries with more than 23, 000 deaths.
