Lithuania seeks to strengthen cooperation with Jordan

Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Linas Linkevičius 27 October during his visit in Jordan met with Jordan’s Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour to discuss the cooperation between the two countries in the political, economic, cultural and educational fields. With the particular focus on economic relations, the officials agreed to exchange business delegations in the near future.

L.Linkevičius highlighted the successful cooperation between Lithuania and Jordan in the United Nations Security Council. Both countries have been elected as non-permanent members of the UN Security Council for the 2014-2015 term.

“Jordan is Lithuania’s partner in the Middle East and on the UN Security Council. We appreciate Jordan’s significant and stabilizing role in the region, particularly with regard to the Middle East peace process, Iraq and Syria. It is important to continue to strengthen the dialogue between our countries and to expand their cooperation scope,” stressed the Lithuanian Foreign Minister.

The Foreign Ministers of Lithuania and Jordan 26 October signed a memorandum of understanding between the respective ministries on the establishment of a mechanism for bilateral consultations. They visa exemption agreement for holders of diplomatic passports was also signed.

“These agreements pave the way for a expansion of the dialogue between the countries, in advancing bilateral relations and enhancing cooperation within international organisations,” said L.Linkevičius.

At the Jordanian World Affairs Council Lithuania’s Foreign Minister delivered a public lecture on indivisible security. Minister Linkevičius underlined that security had no borders in the 21st century, so it was important to cooperate as closely as possible in order to overcome these global challenges and terrorism threats.

In a meeting with the Latin Bishop Maron Al-Lahham, the Foreign Minister discussed the situation of Christians in the region and thanked him for the open door policy. Thousands of Christians from the neighbouring Palestine, Iraq and Syria find shelter in Jordan.

The head of Lithuania’s diplomacy met with the Chairman of the Senate of Jordan Abdur-Ra’uf Rawabdeh, the President of the House of Representatives Atef Tarawneh, the Minister of Industry and Trade Hatem Al-Halawani, members of the Jordan Enterprise Development Corporation (JEDCO) and the Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Ibrahim Saif. Lithuanian Minister also met with Salma Nims, Secretary General at Jordanian National Commission for Women, and visited Zaatari refugee camp.
