LITHUANIA SEEKS TO INTENSIFY ECONOMIC RELATIONS WITH BANGLADESH

On 1 July in Vilnius, the first Lithuanian and Bangladeshi foreign ministers’ meeting was held. At the meeting, Audronius Ažubalis and Dipu Moni discussed bilateral relations, prospects of development of economic ties and cooperation within international organizations.

A.Ažubalis stressed that Lithuania was interested to intensify economic relations and to expand trade with this developing country of South Asia.

According to him, the fact that compared with 2009, Lithuania’s exports to Bangladesh increased by 87 per cent in 2010, reflects the potential of economic relations.

At the meeting, Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs also said that Lithuania was a country that had gained significant experience of democratization and was currently ending its biennial Presidency of the Community of Democracies. Minister A.Ažubalis believes that Lithuania could share this experience with Bangladesh.

Lithuanian Foreign Minister requested Bangladesh to support Lithuania’s candidacy during the elections of non-permanent members of the United Nations Security Council. Each country’s support will be important for Lithuania during the elections in 2013.

In Vilnius, Foreign Minister of Bangladesh D.Moni is taking part in the events of the Community of Democracies.

Lithuania and Bangladesh established bilateral relations on 2 November 1992. Accredited to Lithuania Ambassador Saiful Hoque resides in Moscow. In the nearest future, Lithuania intends to accredit to Bangladesh Lithuanian Ambassador, who resides in India.

In 2010, bilateral Lithuanian-Bangladeshi foreign trade balance was positive and amounted to 14.5 million Litas. Lithuania mostly exports hardware, measuring devices, electronic equipment and beverages to Bangladesh.
