In response to the letter by NATO Secretary General Lord Robertson, whereby Lithuania was invited to commence NATO accession talks, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Antanas Valionis informed the Secretary General of NATO on 26 November that Lithuania accepted this invitation.
“The invitation to start the accession process is a long-awaited recognition by NATO that after regaining their independence and freedom, Lithuania and other invitees have been over the past decade following and cherishing the basic values and principles of the alliance,” Minister Valionis underscored in his letter and expressed his confidence in Lithuania’s successful conclusion of accession talks already in March 2003.
