Lithuania regrets Russia‘s support for illegal "elections" in east of Ukraine

Lithuania regrets Russia’s decision to block the adoption by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) of a press statement on the illegal “elections” in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions of Ukraine to be held by armed separatists on 2 November.

The proposed text on 31 October called on all parties to fully implement the Minsk Protocol of 5 September 2014 and the Minsk Memorandum of 19 September 2014 in their entirety, as agreed within the framework of the Trilateral Contact Group, noting that holding of such “elections” by the separatist groups runs counter to these  agreements. The draft also contained a reaffirmation of support for the independence, sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity of Ukraine – the core principles on which a political solution to the crisis should be based.

Earlier this week, the UN Secretary General deplored the planned “elections” by illegal armed groups in the east of Ukraine. So did many UN Security Council members at the UN Security Council meeting on 24 October.
