LITHUANIA RECEIVES PERMANENT OBSERVER STATUS TO THE ORGANIZATION OF AMERICAN STATES
On 16 December during the meeting of the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) in Washington, D.C., Lithuania has been unanimously granted permanent observer status. Lithuania will join the activities of one of the world’s oldest regional organizations and will contribute to the implementation of its goals. Currently, the OAS brings together 35 North American, Latin American and Caribbean countries. In addition, the organization has granted permanent observer status to 63 states, as well as to the European Union.
The Committee on Juridical and Political Affairs of the OAS positively assessed the application of Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs to the Secretary General Jose Miguel Insulza, asking to grant permanent observer status to Lithuania. In compliance with the recommendations of the Committee, the Permanent Council satisfied the request of Lithuania.
Lithuania’s Ambassador to the U.S.A. Audrius Brūzga attended the Council meeting. He said that Lithuania took interest in political processes of South America and North America, and was ready to share its experience in implementing economic and social reforms. The OAS will allow Lithuania to gain more understanding of the American countries and to prepare for the upcoming EU Presidency better, as one of the EU’s strategies is to develop the cooperation with the Latin American and Caribbean countries.
