Lithuania protests to Russia over attacks on Ukraine and disinformation campaign against the Baltic states
On 8 July, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned a representative of the Embassy of the Russian Federation in the Republic of Lithuania and issued a note of protest over the latest Russian attacks on civilians in Ukraine, as well as the ongoing Russian information attack on the Baltic states.
On the night of 6-7 July, Ukraine suffered another massive attack by the Russian Federation, which launched 68 different types of missiles and several hundred combat drones. At least 27 civilians were killed and around 100 wounded in the attack. The city of Kyiv has suffered significant damage; staggering losses have also been recorded in the capital's suburbs and other regions of Ukraine. Residential, commercial and energy facilities, including petrol stations, have been destroyed or damaged. In the night from 7 to 8 July, the Ukrainian capital Kyiv was again shelled by the Russian forces.
The note issued to Russia underlines that deliberate terror against civilians and infrastructure is a gross violation of international humanitarian law and constitutes a war crime that is not subject to any statute of limitations. Lithuania will continue to seek to identify, name and bring to justice the sponsors, organisers and perpetrators of all crimes committed by the Russian Federation against Ukraine.
The meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs also categorically rejected false claims made by Russian Federation officials against the Baltic states. It was emphasized that the Republic of Lithuania has never allowed the use of its territory and airspace for drone attacks against targets in Russia and has repeatedly informed the Russian Federation about this through both diplomatic channels and public statements. In addition, the Russian representative was informed that allegations promoted by representatives of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs claiming that the Baltic states are
planning the mass deportation of Russian-speaking residents are entirely false. Lithuania stated unequivocally that no such plans have ever existed and do not exist today.
