LITHUANIA PROPOSES TO ENHANCE THE EFFICACY OF THE NUCLEAR NON-PROLIFERATION TREATY

Lithuanian delegation takes part in 7th Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), which begins on 2 May in New York.

The Review Conference aims at considering issues of non-proliferation, disarmament and peaceful use of nuclear energy.

The head of Lithuanian delegation Director of Foreign Ministry Security policy department Kęstutis Jankauskas is one of the vice-chairmen of the Conference.

“Only strong and effective Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons can ensure success of the efforts of international community fighting with proliferation threats and continuation of the nuclear disarmament process” - Kęstutis Jankauskas stated during the Conference from the United Nations General Assembly tribune on 3 May.

The head of Lithuanian delegation asserted that it is essential to strengthen the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) nuclear objects control and observation system and urged to ratify the Additional Protocol of IAEA.

The matters of great concern are North Korea’s intention to withdraw from the NPT and its claims about nuclear weapon possession, vague Iran’s nuclear programs and threats of nuclear terrorism. India’s, Pakistan’s and Israel’s refusal to join the NPT process and renounce nuclear weapons also remains a serious problem.

Presenting Lithuania’s position K. Jankauskas underlined the necessity to continue nuclear disarmament process, and encouraged Russia and the U.S. to fully implement unilateral obligations undertaken in 1991-1992 to eliminate certain hazardous types of nuclear weapons and tighten its control.

Lithuania stands for international disarmament agenda to be based on accountability, credible verification and transparency principles.
