LITHUANIA OFFERS CENTRAL ASIA ITS EXPERIENCE OF DEVELOPING THE “PREVENTIVE DIPLOMACY” CONCEPT
On 10 December, during the opening of United Nations Regional Centre in Ashgabat, Undersecretary of Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Laimonas Talat-Kelpša proposed to use Lithuanian experience of building stable, open and internationally integrated society more actively. “Lithuania is always ready to share its experience – both successes and failures”, - said L. Talat-Kelpša.
Undersecretary of the Ministry also emphasized that conflict prevention is not only about collectively fighting contemporary threats, but it concerns a successful integration of developing countries into international systems and constructive relations with neighbours as well.
“We hope that today’s opening of UN Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy in Ashgabat will help Central Asian countries to pursue these goals”, - said Lithuanian diplomat.
This is the first time after restoration of Lithuania’s independence, when an official Lithuanian delegation visits Turkmenistan. Lithuanian businessmen delegation also visits Turkmenistan, they are hosted by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Ashgabat.
On 11 December, Undersecretary of the Ministry L.Talat-Kelpša is meeting with Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov, Minister of Trade and Foreign Economic Relations Nokerguly Atagulyyev, Chairperson of the Parliament Akja Nurberdiyeva and other Turkmenistan officials. During the meetings, opportunities for bilateral cooperation as well as cooperation between the states while implementing the European Union Strategy for Central Asia (adopted in June 2007) will be discussed.
