LITHUANIA-MOLDOVA CONSULTATIONS ON ENERGY ISSUES HELD IN VILNIUS

On 12 November, Lithuania-Moldova consultations were held in Vilnius. During the consultations, representatives from Moldova, officials from Lithuanian ministries of foreign affairs and energy, and energy experts discussed important issues related to energy and energy security, and possibilities for closer cooperation in the implementation of the European Union’s Eastern Partnership initiative.

The meeting also discussed the preparations for the Eastern Partnership Summit, which is due in the autumn of 2013 in Lithuania.

Representatives from Moldova took interest in Lithuania’s experience in implementation of the EU energy policy and national energy strategy, as well as strategic energy projects.

Moldova is currently restructuring its energy sector, aiming to implement the provisions of the EU and European Energy Community. Today, Moldova is dependent on its sole external gas supplier and does not have any gas links to European countries. However, the country is ready to consistently implement the EU’s requirements in order to create a modern energy sector, which will function in accordance with the principle of an open market.
