LITHUANIA LOSES A PROMINENT LITVAK POET

Founder of the Lithuanian Jewish State Museum, internationally renowned Yiddish poet Abraham Sutzkever, 96, passed away in Tel Aviv on 20 January. This deeply spiritual man had survived one of the most tragic events in the history of our country.

“With so much pain in our hearts we are saying goodbye to the great Litvak bard, who was born near Vilnius. The light of his poetry and spirit will always shine upon the people of Lithuania, who cherish the country’s history and culture, shaped by all the nations living in Lithuania. Let the poet’s life and work guide our lives like a bright star,” Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Vygaudas Ušackas said.

According to the Minister, the belief that the survivors of the most dreadful nightmares can and should remain human is a noble present that poet A.Sutzkever has offered to current and future generations.

On 5 February 2008, A.Sutzkever was awarded the Cross of the Knight of the Order of Lithuanian Grand Duke Gediminas.
