Lithuania joins the U.S. initiative to strengthen  the security of undersea cables

On November 27, Lithuania joined the U.S.-initiated international declaration on strengthening the security of undersea cables.

The Government of the Republic of Lithuania, following a proposal by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, today approved the accession to the United States-initiated Joint Statement on the Security and Resilience of Undersea Cables in a Globally Digitalized World.

To date, the European Union and 16 other countries, including Australia, Canada, the Federated States of Micronesia, Finland, France, Japan, the Marshall Islands, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Portugal, the Republic of Korea, Singapore, Tonga, Tuvalu, and the United Kingdom, have signed up to this statement.

“Threats to undersea cables and other critical undersea infrastructure are constantly increasing. Physical or cyber-attacks by authoritarian states increasingly target these critical objects. Joining this U.S. initiative is an important step in promoting closer international cooperation and uniting efforts to ensure sustainable and comprehensive protection of undersea infrastructure,” Landsbergis noted.

On 17 and 18 November this year, cables between Lithuania, Sweden, Finland and Germany were damaged, as well as a gas pipeline and cable between Estonia and Finland in October 2023.
