Lithuania joins the resolution tabled by the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and Germany on Iran's nuclear programme to the IAEA Board of Governors

The Vice-Minister noted that Iran cannot acquire a nuclear weapon and must resume cooperation with the IAEA. Valys expressed solidarity with the Gulf states and Jordan and called for the implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2817 (2026), condemning Iran’s attacks against its regional neighbours.

During the meeting, Lithuania joined the co-sponsors of the resolution and voted in favour of the resolution of the Board of Governors on further verification of Iran's nuclear programme submitted and adopted by the United States of America, the United Kingdom, France, and Germany. The resolution demands that Iran provide the IAEA with immediate and detailed information on the availability of nuclear stocks and sites, as well as grant the IAEA inspectors access to verify them.

At the IAEA Board of Governors, Taurimas Valys also spoke about the situation of nuclear guarantees in North Korea.

"We condemn North Korea's nuclear and ballistic missile programmes and call for the denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula. We condemn the military cooperation between Russia and North Korea that enables Russia’s aggression against Ukraine," said Valys.

On the sidelines of the Board of Governors, the Vice-Minister met with the Ambassador to Austria Ham Sang-wook, who serves as the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Korea to the International Organizations  in Vienna. During the meeting, nuclear safety and security issues were discussed. It was noted that the cooperation between Russia and North Korea affects regional and global security and contributes to Russia's aggression in Ukraine. During the meeting, experiences were shared in the fight against hybrid threats. The experiences of the South Korean Presidency of the Wassenaar Arrangement Plenary were also discussed, with Lithuania taking over the Presidency in 2027.

The IAEA is an organization within the United Nations system, with180 member states. The Board of Governors  consists of 35 members. Lithuania serves as a full, voting member of the Board of Governors for the 2025–2027 term.
