Lithuania joins the Joint Statement on Iran’s destabilising ballistic missile and drone programmes

On 18 October 2023, certain restrictions outlined in the UN Security Council resolution 2231 (2015) to constrain Iran’s ballistic missile program expired. Despite that, Iran’s missile programme remains a significant challenge to international peace and security. The Resolution 2231 (2015) was based on the assumption that Iran would take the necessary steps towards restoring confidence in the exclusively peaceful nature of its nuclear program. It has not happened.

In this context, Lithuania and other Proliferation Security Initiative (PSI)-endorsing states signed a Joint Statement confirming their resolve to oppose Iran’s destabilising ballistic missile- and drone-related activities. By signing the Joint Statement of 18 October, Lithuania demonstrates its determination to support international efforts to address Iran’s and other challenges related to the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and drones.
