Lithuania issues strong protest to Russia over mass shelling of Ukraine
On 3 July, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned a representative of the Embassy of the Russian Federation in the Republic of Lithuania and issued a note of strong protest over the mass shelling of Ukraine by the Russian Armed Forces targeting civilians, residential areas and other civilian infrastructure.
During the night from 1 to 2 July, the military forces of the Russian Federation launched at least 75 different types of missiles and almost 500 combat drones. The city of Kyiv was the most affected by the attack. The attack killed at least 27 Ukrainian civilians and injured at least 90. The Ukrainian emergency services are still searching for people under the rubble of residential buildings. The attack also destroyed a warehouse of the Ukrainian Red Cross, destroying over EUR 1.5 million worth of humanitarian supplies. On the night of 3 July, the Russian Federation continued to carry out attacks against civilians. A multi-apartment residential building in the Romny community of the Sumy region was hit. Four people were killed in the attack, including a one-year-old girl and her mother.
In the note, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly condemns all attacks by the Russian Federation on Ukraine and its people. The Ministry emphasizes that the Russian Federation, through its further aggressive actions, demonstrates its unwillingness to end the aggression and continues to terrorize the civilian population of Ukraine, which undoubtedly constitutes a violation of international humanitarian law.
Lithuania will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that all those who plan, organize, and perpetrate crimes committed by the Russian Federation against Ukraine and its people are identified, named, and held accountable. The Russian Federation must stop its aggression, withdraw its occupying forces from the entire internationally recognised territory of Ukraine and compensate Ukraine for the damage it has suffered.
