Lithuania issued a protest to Russia over the shelling of Ukraine and attempts to undermine US and Ukrainian efforts to achieve peace
On 28 December, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania summoned the representative of the Russian Embassy and handed him a note of protest regarding the shelling of Ukrainian territory and attempts to undermine the efforts of the US and Ukrainian presidents to end Russian aggression against Ukraine and achieve peace.
In recent days, Russian military forces have intensified their attacks on Ukrainian cities, civilian and energy infrastructure. During the latest such attack on 27 December more than a million peaceful residents of Ukrainian capital Kyiv were left without electricity and heating. Targeted attacks on energy infrastructure pose a direct and massive threat to the lives of civilians, amounting to a war crime, the note says.
Lithuania also strongly condemned the fact that during the attack on December 27, Russian missiles and drones hit more than a dozen residential high-rise buildings, as well as one of the buildings where the Ukrainian Ministry of Education and Science is based.
The Republic of Lithuania considers the massive shelling of Ukraine on the eve of the meeting between the US and Ukrainian presidents to be clear evidence that Russia is seeking to undermine the peace negotiations and continue the war.
The Republic of Lithuania once again called on the Russian Federation to immediately cease its aggression against Ukraine, withdraw all occupying forces from the internationally recognized territory of Ukraine, and compensate Ukraine for all damage caused by Russia's aggression.
