LITHUANIA IS ATTRACTING NATO NON-MILITARY CARGO TRANSIT

Lithuania is searching for possibilities to increase volumes of cargo transit via its territory, which would have a positive impact on the development of Lithuania’s transportation and logistics sector, as well as on the economic indicators.

Recent changes in the legal rules, regulating NATO’s relations with the third countries in the area of transit, has created conditions for the transit of NATO non-military cargo via the Baltic seaports the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) operations in Afghanistan. Therefore, both Lithuania and other neighbouring countries have been started a campaign in order to direct the abovementioned cargo via their national ports and railway junctions.

Lithuania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also started making active lobbying efforts by presenting benefits of the Lithuanian transportation and logistics network to its NATO partners, as well as by declaring the readiness to receive and transport by transit NATO non-military cargo to Afghanistan.

On 9 February in Šiauliai, the Government of Lithuania discussed this issue and agreed upon its importance. Therefore, an active work with NATO partners will continue. Further actions and success will mainly depend on the concerted cooperation between institutions and transportation and logistics facilities, as well as on the country’s ability to stay competitive with regard to both price and quality.
