LITHUANIA INVITES THE UNITED NATIONS COUNTRIES TO TAKE PART IN THE NEWLY ESTABLISHED UNIVERSAL PERIODIC REVIEW OF THE HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL

On 5 March in Geneva, during 7th session of the Human Rights Council of the United Nations, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Oskaras Jusys indicated that after successfully establishing the Human Rights Council, it was high time to start applying the adopted rules of procedure.  ‘Hence Lithuania would like to invite all the United Nations Member States to take an active part in the newly established universal periodic review of the Human Rights Council and to cooperate with special procedures and special rapporteurs,’ said O.Jusys.

The Undersecretary of the Ministry also mentioned that in 2007, the UN Special Rapporteur on contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance Doudou Diène visited Lithuania for the first time. O.Jusys stressed the importance of cooperation between the newly established Alliance of Civilizations and the Human Rights Council.

The UN Human Rights Council started its activity in June of 2006. It replaced the former UN Commission on Human Rights. The Council is the main UN body, which addresses the Human Rights issues. The Council is comprised of 47 countries.

Lithuania is an observer to the Human Rights Council. The Human Rights Council is holding its seventh session from 3 to 28 March.
