LITHUANIA INVITES THE ORGANIZATION FOR SECURITY AND CO-OPERATION IN EUROPE TO OBSERVE THE ELECTIONS OF THE LITHUANIAN PARLIAMENT

Lithuania invited the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (the OSCE) to observe the elections of the Lithuanian parliament (the Seimas) which are scheduled for 12 October. By inviting the OSCE, Lithuania is fulfilling its international commitments.

On 10 April, the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Lithuania to the International Organizations in Vienna Ambassador Rytis Paulauskas informed the Permanent Council of the OSCE about this invitation.

The election observation in the OSCE member states is organized by the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights, it has a unique experience in the field of election observation. During the last decade the Office had organized around 150 election observation missions thus attracting thousands of experts and observers from all OSCE countries.

Lithuania regularly delegates its representatives to the OSCE election observation missions. 43 representatives of our country participated in the OSCE election observation missions in 2007. Lithuania also contributes to the fund of the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights. The Office supports the participation of the election observers from the states which have more modest financial capabilities.
