LITHUANIA INVITES THE EU TO AID MOLDOVA

On 27 October during the European Union’s General Affairs and External Relations Council meeting, the EU foreign ministers discussed political and economic situation in Moldova and possible EU aid for this country. The discussion was held at the initiative of Hungary, Lithuania, Poland and Romania.

Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Vygaudas Ušackas welcomed the determination of Moldova’s new authorities to continue Euro-integration processes. The Minister expects that Moldova’s presidential election will be carried out successfully and will provide possibilities to continue smooth implementation of the reforms that are important for the country.

Minister V.Ušackas also expressed trust that already in the beginning of 2010, the EU and Moldova would open negotiations on the new enhanced agreement and a dialogue on visa liberalisation would start in the nearest future.

“Despite this historic development of bilateral relations, we should not forget the complex economic situation of the country. Therefore, it is very important that the EU would provide financial aid to Moldova as soon as possible,” Minister V.Ušackas stressed.

Aiming to help Moldova find a way out of the current complex financial situation, in the beginning of October Lithuania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs initiated a joint letter of foreign ministers of Hungary, Lithuania, Poland and Romania to the European Commission regarding the provision of an urgent financial aid for Moldova.

The European Commission has already promised to provide Moldova with financial aid of 22.5 million euros by the end of 2009.
