LITHUANIA INVITES MOROCCO TO BE MORE ACTIVE IN THE COMMUNITY OF DEMOCRACIES
On 27 April, Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Audronius Ažubalis received Secretary of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of the Kingdom of Morocco Latifa Akharbach, who is paying a visit to Vilnius. The Minister and Secretary of State discussed development of bilateral relations, cooperation between Lithuania and Morocco within multilateral frameworks and the European Union - Morocco relations. Minister A.Ažubalis conveyed an invitation to Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation to pay a visit to Lithuania.
The meeting of Lithuania’s Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Asta Skaisgirytė Liauškienė and Secretary of State L.Akharbach was held on the same day. Cooperation between Lithuania and Morocco, possibilities for intensifying political dialogue and for strengthening bilateral economic, academic and cultural relations were discussed during the meeting.
Strengthening of cooperation between Lithuania and Morocco within international organizations was also discussed. Morocco was invited to be more active in the Community of Democracies which is currently chaired by Lithuania.
Vice-Minister A.Skaisgirytė Liauškienė and Secretary of State L.Akharbach exchanged information on the important issues of North Africa, sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East and relations with neighbouring countries.
Morocco’s Secretary of State highlighted that for Morocco - the southern neighbour of the EU and its strategic partner – it is very important to strengthen bilateral relations with the EU member states. The Secretary of State expressed gratitude for Lithuania’s active role in the EU and on the international arena, and stressed the importance of Lithuania’s chairmanship of the Community of Democracies.
The programme of Secretary of State L.Akharbach’s visit to Lithuania on 27-28 April also includes meetings at the Seimas (Parliament) of Lithuania, Ministries of Economy, Culture, Agriculture, Association of Lithuanian Chambers of Commerce, Industry and Crafts, Institute of International Relations and Political Science of Vilnius University, non-governmental organizations.
