Lithuania helps to solve humanitarian crisis in Yemen

On 2 June, the Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Neris Germanas participated in a video conference of international donors of Yemen, which was organized by the United Nations and Saudi Arabia. N. Germanas announced Lithuania’s decision to allocate EUR 100, 000 in humanitarian aid to Yemen. The funds will be transferred to the UN’s Yemen Humanitarian Fund.

“Lithuania is watching the humanitarian situation in Yemen with concern. The coronavirus outbreak has only exacerbated an already dire situation. Thus, it is particularly important to ensure that the people of Yemen have access to humanitarian aid," said Lithuania’s Foreign Vice Minister.

According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, an estimated 80 per cent of the population – 24 million people – require some form of humanitarian assistance. Currently, more than 20 million people are food insecure. In addition, 19.7 million Yemenis need health assistance and 18 million people still do not have adequate access to safe drinking water.

More than 100, 000 people have been killed in war-torn Yemen. The country is experiencing the world's worst humanitarian crisis.

Lithuania has allocated a total of EUR 185, 000 in humanitarian aid to Yemen since 2014.
