LITHUANIA HELPS ESTABLISHING NATO INFORMATION CENTRES IN GEORGIA

Last week a joint project of Lithuanian Atlantic Treaty Association (LATA) and a non-governmental organization in Georgia „New Generation-new Initiative“ (nGnI) has been accomplished – eleven NATO Information Centres were established in the schools and universities in various cities and towns of Georgia.

The aim of the project “Establishment of NATO Information Centres in Georgia – Sharing Lithuanian Experience with Georgia on its Way of Integration into NATO” is to provide exhaustive information about the processes of NATO-Georgian Euro-Atlantic integration, encourage debates of the society and its participation in political and social processes of the country.

On the occasion of the opening of NATO Information Centres, experts from Lithuanian Ministry of Defence, foreign diplomats residing in Georgia, representatives of NATO Public Diplomacy Division and Georgian Government as well as nGnI and LATA members participated in the meetings and discussions with pupils, students and local communities.

An animated cartoon about NATO was created for this occasion and shown to the participants of the events, experts from Lithuania told them about the Lithuanian experience of integration into NATO.

The week of events was finalised by arranging a teleconference Brussels-Tbilisi with NATO Special Representative for South Caucasus and Central Asia Robert Simmons and Permanent Representative of Lithuania to NATO Ambassador Linas Linkevičius.

Visitors of NATO Information Centres will be offered information material on NATO, Georgia-NATO relations, improvements of social and economic conditions, opportunnities and prospects, that would  open for Georgia after it joins NATO, as well as information on international and non-governmental organizations.

Centres will be headed by specially trained directors. They will organize events on the issues that are important to NATO and society, will invite guest-speakers to the meetings, will start cooperation with various organizations.

The project was sponsored by Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Defence, Lithuanian Embassy in Georgia, Bulgarian Embassy in Georgia as well as NATO Public Diplomacy Division.
