Lithuania Has Once Again Urged Belarusian Government to Abstain from Using Force Against Opposition

On 3 August, the Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Linas Linkevičius talked to the Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei. The phone conversation was initiated by Lithuania.

“We are very worried that the Government might use violence and excessive force against the opposition during and especially after the election. Moreover, we have an extremely negative view of the imminent launch of the Astravets power plant. According to our information the launch is being rushed regardless of security requirements,“ stressed Minister Linkevičius.

The Minister emphasised once again that the independence of Belarus is important to Lithuania, therefore we will help to safeguard it both internationally and through bilateral relations.
