LITHUANIA GETS ELECTED AS FULL-FLEDGED MEMBER OF THE INTERNATIONAL LABOUR ORGANIZATION’S BOARD OF DIRECTORS

At the 100th Session of the International Labour Conference on 6 June in Geneva, Lithuania was elected as full-fledged member of the International Labour Organization’s (ILO) Board of Directors and will hold this position from 2011 to 2014.Having been elected full-fledged member of the Board of Directors, Lithuania is now eligible to participate in making and influencing the organization’s important decisions.

The ILO aims to increase social justice for employees around the world. The ILO contributes to the implementation of fundamental principles and promotes rights at work, encourages decent employment opportunities and equal pay for men and women, enhances social protection, strengthens social dialogue and tripartite cooperation.

The Board of Directors is an executive body of the International Labour Office of the ILO’s Secretariat, which has 56 members: representatives of 28 governments, 14 employers and 14 employees.

The Board of Directors works in accordance with the principle of tripartite cooperation.

The Board of Directors meets three times a year (in November, March and June). The Board makes decisions regarding the issues of ILO’s policy, programme and budget, elects the Director-General and decides on other matters relating to the management of the ILO.

In 2008 during an annual ILO conference, Lithuania was elected an alternate member of the Board of Directors for a period of three years. Lithuania has been elected as full-fledged member of the International Labour Organization’s Board of Directors for the second time. The country also held this position in 2002-2005.
