LITHUANIA FIRMLY SUPPORTS THE OPEN DOOR POLICY PRINCIPE OF THE NATO ALLIANCE

On 5 March in Berlin, at the conference ‘Ahead of the NATO Summit: Prospects and Problems for NATO Enlargement to the East’, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Žygimantas Pavilionis expressed strong support for the invitation of Albania, Croatia and Macedonia to NATO in April, during the NATO Summit Meeting of Heads of State and Government in Bucharest.

Current members of the Vilnius Ten - Albania, Croatia and Macedonia are implementing the NATO Membership Action Plan (MAP).

At the conference, the Undersecretary of the Ministry dedicated particularly a lot of attention to the requests of Georgia and Ukraine to open up cooperation with those countries according to the NATO MAP program already during the NATO Summit.

‘The Membership Action Plan is beneficial for all of us. We assume that the MAP would provide Georgia and Ukraine with the necessary tools to complete the reforms that are underway. Our own experience shows that with the MAP we will be able to aid them more effectively,’ said Ž.Pavilionis.

The Lithuanian diplomat indicated that the NATO was also the Alliance of values.

‘It is obvious that Georgia and Ukraine share the same values with the Euro-Atlantic community. Therefore, the invitation for them to join the MAP is a natural result of their efforts and reforms,’ spoke Ž.Pavilionis.
