LITHUANIA EXPRESSES CONCERN REGARDING THE DIFFICULTIES THAT ITS COMPANIES FACE IN SERBIA

On 15 March in Vilnius, Lithuania’s Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Asta Skaisgirytė Liauškienė met with new Ambassador of Serbia to Lithuania Radojko Bogojević. During the meeting, the Vice-Minister voiced concern regarding the difficulties that are faced by Lithuanian companies which had invested in Serbia.

“Termination of privatization agreements with Lithuanian enterprises sends a bad signal to potential Lithuanian and European Union’s investors in Serbia,” A.Skaisgirytė Liauškienė said.

The Vice-Minister invited Serbia to comply with bilateral agreements and to aim at peaceful solutions of problems with Lithuanian enterprises.

“Transparent business environment is an important requirement for Serbia on it’s way to the EU membership,” Vice-Minister A.Skaisgirytė Liauškienė stressed.

Relations between Lithuania and Serbia, the EU-Serbia cooperation, Kosovo and energy issues were also discussed at the meeting.

On 16 February 2010, the Privatization Agency of Serbia decided to terminate the agreement with the Lithuanian company Alita and the Swedish company United Nordic Beverages regarding the acquisition of shares of the brewery Beogradska Industria Piva. On 9 January 2009, Serbia terminated the agreement with Arvi and Sanitex companies regarding the privatization of the HIP Azotara nitrogen fertilizer plant.

In 2009, Lithuanian and Serbian trade turnover was 11.6 million Litas. Lithuania’s trade balance with Serbia was positive and amounted to 6.4 million Litas. In 2009, Lithuania’s exports to Serbia amounted to 9 million Litas and imports reached 2.6 million Litas.

Serbia’s Ambassador to Lithuania resides in Warsaw, Poland.
