LITHUANIA EXPRESSES CONCERN OVER THE DISSEMINATION OF FALSE INFORMATION BY RUSSIA’S MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS

On 20 July, Lithuanian Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Evaldas Ignatavičius met with Ambassador of Russia to Lithuania Vladimir Chkhikvadze and presented him a note of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania. The note expresses concern over the false and insulting statements that were published on the official website of Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

These statements are related to the release of the suspect in the case of the events of 13 January 1991, a citizen of the Russian Federation Mikhail Golovatov who was detained in Austria, as well as to other circumstances.

The note also requests to explain Russia’s possible leverage over Austrian official institutions with regard to the release of the aforementioned suspect.

During the meeting, Lithuanian Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs expressed regret that despite Lithuania’s repeated appeals to competent Russian authorities for legal assistance regarding the events of 13 January 1991 in Lithuania, Russia has so far been reluctant to cooperate on these issues, and thus is in breach with its international obligations.
