Lithuania expressed protest to the Russian Embassy against the removal of monuments in Irkutsk region

On  May 16, Alexander Elkin, Interim Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of the Russian Federation in the Republic of Lithuania, was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to protest the removal of the monuments commemorating the Lithuanian and Polish deportees and political prisoners in Irkutsk region, in Russia.

The Lithuanian Foreign Ministry condemned Russia’s actions, i.e., the removal of a monument and a cross from the location commemorating Lithuanian and Polish exiles and political prisoners. The targeted Russia’s actions of illegal removal of monuments and symbols of tribute to the victims of repressions and deportees cannot be seen any other than a desecration of the historical truth and the memory of victims of the totalitarian regimes.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs recalls that this is the second incident of a kind in a few months. On April 26, Alexander Elkin, Interim Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of Russia, was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs over the demolition of a monument to the Lithuanian and Polish deportees buried in the Perm region.
