LITHUANIA EXPRESSED CONCERN ABOUT THE EVENTS IN KALININGRAD
On 9 August, Acting Director of the Eastern Europe and Central Asia Department of Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Nortautas Statkus met with chargé d’affaires of the Russian Embassy in Lithuania Dmitrij Cvetkov and expressed concern about the murder of the acting director general of the construction company “Roslitstroj”, a Russian citizen Alexander Semkin. The businessman was found dead on 9 August in Kaliningrad.
Until 18 April this year, Lithuanian citizen Stanislovas Jucius was the director general of this construction firm.
N.Statkus indicated that Lithuania was deeply concerned about the incidents in the Kaliningrad Region, which were making the Lithuanian citizens feel insecure, doing damage to the activities of business representatives, investment security as well as business environment in Kaliningrad.
During the meeting the Lithuanian diplomat also reminded that despite numerous requests to provide information concerning the disappearance of S.Jucius, until now Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has received only one note from the Russian Embassy in Lithuania, which said that the criminal case concerning the disappearance of S.Jucius was transferred to the investigator for the cases of special importance in the Prosecutor’s office of the Kaliningrad Region. N.Statkus asked to convey a request to the institutions of the Russian Federation for regular provision of information to Lithuania on the investigation of cases concerning S.Jucius and A.Semkin.
Lithuanian representative informed the Russian diplomat that if there were no progress in the investigation of the case and no measures were taken to guarantee the security of business in the Kaliningrad Region, Lithuania would be obliged to raise those questions during the forthcoming informal meeting of the foreign ministers of the European Union (Gymnich) and at the EU-Russia Summit.
