LITHUANIA EXPECTS TO FIND A MUTUALLY ACCEPTABLE DECISION REGARDING THE BUILDING OF THE PRE-WAR LITHUANIAN DIPLOMATIC REPRESENTATION IN ROME

9 July State Secretary of Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Deividas Matulionis and visiting in Vilnius Director General of the Directorate General for the Countries of Europe of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Italy Laura Mirachian discussed the issue of the building of the pre-war Lithuanian diplomatic representation in Rome.

During the meeting State Secretary of the Ministry D.Matulionis indicated that it was a political and legal issue of bilateral Lithuanian-Italian relations.

State Secretary of the Ministry D.Matulionis thanked Italy for their offer to rent Cassali Strozzi buildings for a symbolic price and regretted that this suggestion did not satisfy the fundamental principle of historical justice and property restitution.

“We expect alternative proposals to be put forward. Lithuania anticipates to be offered another building of the same value as the pre-war Lithuanian diplomatic representation building or an appropriate compensation,” – said D.Matulionis.

The State Secretary emphasized that Lithuania still hopes to have the same building of the pre-war Lithuanian diplomatic representation in Rome restored to its rightful owner after the necessary remaining sum is paid by Lithuania.
