LITHUANIA EXPECTS GERMANY’S SUPPORT FOR INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS AND EFFORTS TO ACHIEVE NUCLEAR SAFETY IN THE REGION

Lithuania expects Germany’s support for important international infrastructure projects and efforts to ensure that plans of construction of nuclear power plants near the borders of Lithuania and the European Union would be carried out in accordance with the highest international standards for safety.This was underlined on 20 May in Vilnius, at the meeting of Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Audronius Ažubalis and German Minister of State at the Federal Foreign Office Cornelia Pieper, who was paying a visit to Vilnius.

A.Ažubalis said that Lithuania was very concerned about the plans of Russia and Belarus to build new nuclear power plants near the border with Lithuania, which did not comply with international nuclear standards for safety.

“We speak up for a strong Europe, where rules are complied with. General rules are to be met also in the field of nuclear safety and it will help prevent disasters and catastrophes from happening,” the Minister said.

At the meeting, interlocutors also touched upon the topics of the Chairmanship of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), relations with Belarus and cultural cooperation.

Both countries dedicate special attention to the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the re-establishment of diplomatic relations between Lithuania and Germany. An exhibition, dedicated to the history of Lithuania’s diplomatic mission in Germany will be organized and other events will be held on this occasion.

At the meeting, officials also stressed that when developing bilateral relations and thinking about the future of the EU, it was very important to create good conditions for interactions of young people, language learning and that it was important to jointly take care of the transmission of European values ​​to the younger generation.

The agenda of the visit of C.Pieper to Lithuania also includes plans to visit the Jewish Culture and Information Centre and the Ministry of Education and Science Ministry of Education, also to participate in the official opening ceremony of the International Hanseatic Days in Kaunas and in the meeting with representatives from the Kaunas municipality.

Lithuania and Germany re-established diplomatic relations on 28 August 1991.
