Lithuania establishes diplomatic relations with Vanuatu

On 28 September in New York, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius and the Foreign Minister of Vanuatu Serge Vohor signed a Joint Communiqué on the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between the Republic of Lithuania and the Republic of Vanuatu with a focus on promotion of bilateral cooperation.

Linkevičius said that Lithuania’s determination to establish relations with this country was due to the fact that Vanuatu had established diplomatic relations with Georgia at the same time recognizing the country’s territorial integrity. According to the head of Lithuania’s diplomacy, respect for the sovereignty of other states and the inviolability of their borders are fundamental principles of international relations.

In April, Lithuania allocated €10,000 in humanitarian aid to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) for the Vanuatu people. A deadly tropical cyclone devastated Vanuatu on 13-14 March.

Vanuatu became the 181st country with which Lithuania has established diplomatic relations.
